For their final assignments of their 2024 summer internship, our 10 Pittsburgh Media Partnership interns brainstormed stories related to housing and pitched them to their respective host outlets. The result is a series of stories that, while not closely related, all pertain to this important topic and show the growth that the interns achieved during their eight-week stays.
Camille Agie, interning at onStage Pittsburgh, wrote about how housing arrangements are made for staff and talent who stay in Pittsburgh while working on various productions. Kathleen Gianni, writing for the Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle, explored how people in the Jewish Community are moving to the Greenfield area and the resulting changes that have occurred. Abigail Hakas, who divided her internship time between NEXTpittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Independent, looked into the the Housing Opportunity Fund and created social media posts detailing her findings.
Cassandra Harris, who interned for The Homepage in Hazelwood, looked into the past and the future of the 110-year-old Gladstone Residences, a former school turned residential project. Ella Katona, who spent her summer with The Allegheny Front, focused on Pittsburgh United, a chapter of Pennsylvania United that is dedicated to housing justice. Jilian Musser, who worked for Pittsburgh magazine, and Juliana Morello of Pittsburgh Latino Magazine teamed to look at two organizations that help the Latino population with housing and social services — Casa San Jose and Pittsburgh Hispanic Development.
Mitra Nourbakhsh, who interned with the Pittsburgh Business Times, looked into how the City of Pittsburgh is utilizing Inflation Reduction Act funding to upgrade the city’s housing stock and make it less of an energy burden. Hayden Schultz, working with the New Castle News, examined how property ownership in New Castle is affecting residents’ quality of life and cost of living.
