As the temperature gets colder and the leaves begin to change colors, Pittsburghers might find themselves craving something sweet to immerse themselves in the fall season. From Shadyside to Wexford to Squirrel Hill to Market Square, there are many places around the city to visit to find the familiar flavors of fall. A staple of fall in Pittsburgh often includes a trip to Soergel Orchards to go pumpkin and apple picking. While one can surely have fun exploring the orchard, located off Brandt School Road in Wexford, those with a sweet tooth might venture inside the grocery store and bakery. This time of year the bakery offers many fall treats, including apple cider doughnuts, pumpkin gobs, pumpkin rolls, apple cider and candy apples. Barb Jurecko, a salesperson at Soergel’s bakery and deli, said customers love their selection of pies and, of course, their apple cider doughnuts. Jurecko said the bakery “can’t keep them in stock,” as they sell out very fast. Her personal favorite bakery item is the pumpkin roll — a pumpkin cake filled with cream cheese frosting. Jurecko also noted that the apple cider is a must try. “The apple cider is from our fields,” she said. “ They crush and mash them here and make the cider.” One item Jurecko said is original to Soergel’s is its signature sandwich — a pretzel roll sandwich with turkey, cheddar cheese, apple slices and a choice of balsamic or honey mustard. While it isn’t necessarily a sweet item, she said it’s definitely a customer favorite during the fall season.
